We were staying in Jasper for 3 nights, so today we drove to Lake Maligne, one of Jasper's "sights". The dead end road runs up a valley, past deer and other lakes
One of these lakes is Lake Mystery. It used to be a mystery how the water left the lake as there is no surface outlet. In addition the lake fills and empties at random. It has since been found that the water flows underground to the east and joins Drinnan Creek, mystery solved
Lake Maligne was frozen when we reached it. Boat tours are run here in the summer, and have been since Victorian times. The lake was just starting to thaw, and we heard later that the boats started running two weeks after I took these photos.
Returning the way we had come, we took the opportunity to stop and walk along the river - its the one that flows down from Lake Maligne. There is a well laid out walk, with a number of pedestrian bridges over the river.
And past more deer to get back to Jasper and a chance to visit the Bears Paw Bakery for a little sustenance
The two girls serving were very friendly, and the decor eclectic.
In the evening we saw the Canadian train pull in - it is the same train that we are due to catch in a few weeks time. It was several hours late arriving today - an indication as to how flexible the timetable is - hit the wrong number of freights going the other way and you can lose hours.
