The city has some interesting buildings all around or close to the central square, like the Cathedral and the Franciscus Church and the Cabildo; a little bit further away the San Bernardo Convent (not open for public).

Lying on the Lerma Valley, Salta is the capital city of the province. It is located at 1,187 meters above sea level, at the bottom of Mounts 20 de Febrero and San Bernardo. Summer is mild and Winter is warm and dry, with records of an annual average temperature of 22ºC.

We stayed again at the Hotel La Candela on TripAdvisor and Hotels own web site

The two evenings we were there we ate out one night at Dona Salta. This restaurant is an institution in Salta and quite touristy. Nevertheless they do a good job and the restaurant is recommendable. Its a bit naff, the waiters are dressed as gauchos, but I can put up with that! Empanadas and steak are the things to eat here.

And the other night at Solar del Convento The steaks, particularly the Bife, are large and well cooked. If in doubt, order one steak and one salad between two. The restaurant, we paid around $160 pesos for two, at around £25 for two is on the high end for Salta. But I did think that it represented good value for money nevertheless. In common with most restaurants in Salta the interior is large and a bit cavernous. Basically the Argentineans do not go in for intimate bistro decor. However we found that atmosphere, food and service well worth recommending.

So on Friday Jan 29 it was time to move on and back to Buenos Aires for a couple of days before catching the cruise ship.
