Mr Mintoff had managed to ruin Malta's tourist industry, and no foreign tourists were going there. There were crazy offers, and this included one for airline staff which was £25 each for a week in the Phoenicia hotel in Valetta, including flights from London, but £19 each from Birmingham. We opted for Birmingham, and quite strangely the flight stopped at London to pick up passengers. Anyway we enjoyed a remarkably cheap week in Malta
